The Club caters for both race and fitness walkers. Racewalking is an Olympic sport where competitors need to comply with rules set by the International Amateur Athletics Federation (see below). Racewalking events are always judged and competitors can be disqualified. Fitness walking is a term we use for all other walkers. Its also been called ‘power walking’ and ‘sport walking. The only rule is that you don’t run.
We have two main seasons, they are the winter season that is held at various venues around Canberra on a Saturday afternoon and we also have a summer season with track walks being held at the AIS Stadium every Thursday evening. Club members also have the opportunity to compete in racewalking events around the country on a regular basis
We have walkers of all ages from five to eighty five plus and walkers of all abilities.
At all our events, you can choose between a long and short distance meaning you can choose the distance that you feel comfortable with. We have fast and slow walkers so you probably won’t come last. Even if you do, we’ll show you how to improve. We also have regular handicap starts so that everyone gets an equal chance of winning.
You can walk as fast or slow as you wish. No matter whether you’re a race or fitness walker, walking fast uses your arms vigorously, giving you a full body work-out.
